Directed Energy Weapons Could Be 'Solution' For Capability Shortfalls, Military Officials Say
10/21/2004
[www.aviationnow.com]
..."Directed energy provides a wide range of options and opportunities," said Harry Disbrow, deputy director for operational capability requirements at Air Force headquarters... Claude M. Bolton Jr., assistant secretary of the Army for acquisition, logistics and technology, said directed energy weapons offers battlefield commanders many alternatives on the battlefield, including precision, reduced response times and the capacity for instantaneous engagement. He also said directed energy could be the next "leap" in technology to fight more efficiently and effectively on the battlefield. "If we are going to pay to keep a modern force and go anywhere that we need to go, we are going to need this technology," ...Earlier this year, U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld directed the DOD [Department of Defense] to produce a roadmap for directed energy weapons and their potential network centric applications. The plan is expected to outline how directed energy weapons could be used in network centric warfare, strategic deterrence, combat, stability operations and homeland defense. The effort also will span all the services and the defense agencies to include technology demonstrations, applied and basic research and the development of a comprehensive approach to the use of directed energy.
